A book for astrologers

Introduction

Ketu is the most mysterious graha in Jyotish. It has no head, no eyes, it cannot see. And yet it feels better than anyone.

Ketu is the past. Everything we have already gone through, mastered and accumulated in past lives. These are our talents that come by themselves, without effort. And at the same time it is the area where life suddenly stops satisfying us, where disappointments come, where we want to leave, close off, renounce.

I have Ketu in the first house, in Scorpio. So I know this graha not from books. I know what fear of rejection is, an intuition that sees people's hidden intentions, and the pull to walk away from everything worldly. And I know how Ketu helps if you work with it properly.

Who this book is for

For those who study Jyotish and want to understand Ketu not as an "evil" graha but as a teacher of renunciation and liberation. For those whose chart is strongly influenced by Ketu, who feel inner emptiness, fears, disappointment and are looking for the purpose of it.

What you will get

  1. Ketu's symbols: the full pitcher, the flag, the body without a head.
  2. Significations of Ketu: the past, talents, intuition, renunciation, the secret.
  3. Ketu in the three gunas.
  4. Ketu's strength parameters.
  5. Ketu in the signs and houses: talents and fear of rejection.
  6. Ketu in conjunctions, and kala amrita yoga.
  7. A step-by-step analysis of Ketu in a horoscope.
  8. Harmonizing Ketu through meditation, forgiveness and discipline.

What this is for in practice

The goal of astrology is not only to settle comfortably in the material world. The goal is to help a person get out of the wheel of birth and death. Ketu is the graha that leads exactly there. If you understand its language, disappointments turn into wisdom and fears into freedom.

Rahu has a book of its own. How to read them together, as one axis, is covered in the book "The Rahu–Ketu Axis".

Chapter 1. Who Ketu is

A body without a head

You remember the story of the demon Svarbhanu. He secretly drank the nectar of immortality, and Lord Vishnu cut off his head. The head became Rahu, and the body Ketu. It is one personality split in two.

Ketu has no head — no eyes, no mouth, no reasoning mind. So Ketu acts not by logic but by intuition. It sees nothing, but feels everything.

The head eats, and the body digests. Rahu is what we are to "eat" in this life. Ketu is what we have already "eaten" in the past and are now digesting. In the first half of life we largely live by inertia, by the qualities of Ketu's sign and house.

Descending node

Astronomically, Ketu is the descending lunar node: the point where the Moon, descending, crosses the Sun's path. It always stands exactly opposite Rahu. Rahu is ascent, the future. Ketu is descent, the past, a return inward.

The full pitcher

There is a beautiful image. Ketu is a full pitcher. In past lives we poured knowledge, experience and skills into it. Rahu is an overturned pitcher: in this life we must pour the contents out onto new soil, give people what we have accumulated.

Sometimes Ketu "holds the lid": the person is afraid to give and doesn't pass on their knowledge. Then Ketu blocks giving. The task is to pour from the full pitcher into the overturned one: from Ketu into Rahu.

The flag on the summit

Ketu's symbol is the flag. A flag is planted where you have already reached the summit. It means: you have already conquered this mountain. There is no point climbing it again and again. You need to go to the next summit, where Rahu is.

That is why, where Ketu is, we have many talents — and little satisfaction. We have already been on this summit.

The backpack

Imagine a boy walking along a road. On his back is a backpack with the experience of the past — that is Ketu. Ahead is new, unfamiliar terrain — that is Rahu. While he is small, he can step forward little by little, in measured doses. And by 42 he will be pushed forward there in any case. There is no going back. But the backpack stays with him: past experience is the support for the new path.

Like Mars, Jupiter and Saturn

They say: "Ketu is like Mars." But Mars is physical strength, courage in the material world. Ketu is spiritual strength: resolve, courage in spiritual life, the ability to destroy inner barriers, grudges, hang-ups in the subconscious.

Ketu also echoes Jupiter in some ways: both lead to spirituality. And Saturn: both teach through hardship and renunciation. But Ketu's lessons aim not simply at maturity but at liberation from the material.

Seen only through the dispositor

Like Rahu, Ketu reveals itself through the dispositor — the lord of the sign it occupies. The dispositor shows through which area a person will reveal Ketu's talents and where they will pay the debts of the past.

I have Ketu in Scorpio; its lord is Mars, and Mars is in the 12th house. So my Ketu talents reveal themselves through 12th-house themes: spirituality, solitude, foreign lands, liberation.
